Wallace B. Landes, Jr.

The Reverend Doctor Wallace B. Landes, Jr., of Palmyra, PA, passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2017 surrounded by his family and the love and prayers of all who knew him. Wally was born in Waynesboro, VA, on February 11, 1952, to Wallace and Mary Coffman Landes. He studied and graduated with degrees from Bridgewater College, Bethany Seminary, Loyola College, Baltimore, Institute For Pastoral Care, VA, and Princeton Theological Seminary. He was married to Bonnie Simmonds Landes on August 3, 1974, in Baltimore, MD. Wally pastored three churches; the Reisterstown Church of the Brethren, the Bush Creek Church of the Brethren, and he most recently served the Palmyra Church of the Brethren as Senior Pastor for 25 years. He served on the Church of the Brethren district and brotherhood boards, taught as an adjunct faculty member for Lebanon Valley College and Elizabethtown College, served through PACC, served the Brethren Housing Association, and was a member of the Palmyra Rotary Club. In his free time, Wally enjoyed camping and canoeing in Algonquin, travelling, motorcycling, and celebrating holidays and special moments with his family and friends. Wally is survived by his wife, Bonnie, his two children, Matt and Kendra, his grandchildren, Ben and Emma, two brothers, Ken Landes and Treacy Landes, and a sister, Deborah Thompson. A memorial service will be held at the Palmyra Church of the Brethren, November 11, 2017 at 11:00 AM. The service will be followed with a luncheon and visitation in the church fellowship hall. Box 96011, Washington, D.C. 20090-6011; Londonderry Village Benevolent Fund, 1200 Grubb Road, Palmyra, PA 17078; or The Caring Cupboard, 131 North Railroad Street, Palmyra, PA 17078. Wally will be sorely missed, but never forgotten. His legacy will live on through the lives that he touched with his kindness, his sense of humor, his warmth, his dedication to ministry, but most of all, his love. ** Bonnie wishes to invite you to the recital of pre-service music and pictorial slideshow remembering Wally which will begin at 10:30AM just before his “Celebration of Life Service” on Saturday, November 11 at Palmyra Church of the Brethren. The service itself will begin at 11:00 AM. Please be aware that November 11 also happens to be Palmyra’s Holiday Parade beginning at noon. The main road, 422, will be closed at 11:00AM for the parade. We are mentioning this, especially for people who may be coming from out of town, so that you can give yourself a little extra time to travel without getting caught in detour traffic either from east or west on 422. If you arrive early for the pre-service recital, you should have no problem with navigating the detour.
