Walter Edwin Laudermilch

Walter Edwin Laudermilch, age 94, a hardworking, World War II Veteran found rest today, June 3, 2016. Walter Laudermilch was born to Edwin and Esther Laudermilch on July 3, 1921. He was one of 8 children in the family. His father worked in the butcher business in Cleona, PA. Walter is survived by two sisters: Francis Rhinehart and Irene Henise. His wife of more than 60 years, Mary Kelley Laudermilch passed away in 2010. Mary and Walter have three sons: Dennis N. Laudermilch of Mountain View, California; Gary E. Laudermilch of Mansfield, PA and Dale J. Laudermilch of Palmyra, PA. Walter took great pride in his grandchildren: Gregory Laudermilch of Sacramento, California; Kelly Laudermilch Holderman of San Diego, California; Brian Laudermilch of Montgomery, PA, and Lindsey Laudermilch of Altoona, PA. He is also survived by six great grandchildren. Walter Laudermilch was raised and worked in the family butcher business and was sometimes called “Butch” by family members and friends. He told the story of taking his driver’s test in the butcher delivery truck. The truck only had one seat for the driver, so the examiner had to sit on a bucket. After graduating high school, Walter decided to pursue a trade. He worked at the Hershey Furniture Company and Deckerts Machine Shop before being hired by Hershey Chocolate Company where he worked for 43 years. He held positions as a maintenance planner for the manufacturing machines, a machinist, a millwright, and as a supervisor. He and his team members kept the machines running that produced, packaged and shipped the chocolate. He was an inventive problem solver who mentored others with his skills and knowledge. He remembers meeting Milton S. Hershey a few times at the factory. Walter enjoyed hunting and fishing especially in Northern Pennsylvania with his family. He built several cabins in Potter and Tioga Counties. Walter was drafted into World War II. He served in the Army in England and Germany. Walter will be remembered in his strong work ethic, his versatile skills, his teaching of others and his time with his family. A viewing will be held at Kreamer Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 618 E. Main Street, Annville, on Saturday June 11, 2016 from 10AM till 12PM. A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family at Gravel Hill Cemetery, Palmyra. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Kindred Place, 1 Kindred Place, Annville, PA 17003.
