Joyce K. Wherley

Joyce Kauffman Wherley, 61, passed away on Friday, May 19, 2017. Born February 6, 1956 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania: the daughter of Raymond, a Navy Seabee, and Betty Kauffman, a career elementary teacher. She graduated from Central Dauphin East High School in 1974 and Mansfield State College in 1978 with a degree in Family Consumer Science Education. While at Mansfield State College she was a proud member of the Marching Mounties as a flutist. She received her master’s degree in child development from Penn State University in 1984. Joyce was a dedicated teacher for 35 years at ELCO middle and high schools. She devoted her career to Family Consumer Science. She also started the well respected and loved Kiddie Korner, a preschool program in which she passed on her love of teaching and taught the fundamentals of education to her high school students. She was honored for her dedication to her students in 2015 with the Secondary Teacher of the Year award from the ELCO school district. A family-woman at heart, Joyce's world was her family. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Richard of Annville, and two sons: Greg and his wife Rachel of Cedar City, UT and Robert and his girlfriend Katie of Hummelstown, PA. She is also survived by one sister, Karen, and her husband and son, Al and Albert, of Baton Rouge, LA. She delighted in cooking for and spending time with her loving family. She also enjoyed the many trips with her husband and sons. Christmas was undoubtedly her favorite time of year for decorating, cooking, baking her delicious treats, and gathering with family and friends. Joyce was a devout Christian and a longtime member of Palm Lutheran Church in Palmyra. She taught Sunday School and was an active member of the congregation as a communion assistant and committee member. She cherished every relationship she created with members of the congregation. The family would like to extend appreciation for the continued support and prayers from the members of Palm Lutheran Church. Joyce was active in her professional and local community and was a member of several associations: Lebanon County Home Economics Association, Lebanon County Education Honor Society, and the Lebanon County Education Association. As a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, she was a committed leader for women in education. Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at 11AM at Palm Lutheran Church, 11 W. Cherry Street, Palmyra, PA 17078. Viewing will be held on Tuesday evening from 6-8PM at Kreamer Funeral Home, 618 E. Main Street, Annville, PA 17003, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to pay their respects donate in Joyce's name to the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation, PO Box 1848, Longmont, CO 80502 or Four Diamonds fund, 1249 Cocoa Avenue, Suite 115, PO Box 852, Hershey, PA 17033.
