Alvin C. Berger

Alvin C. Berger, 90, of Stroudsburg passed away on October 6, 2016 at Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest. He was the loving husband of Clare C. Schaeffer, with whom he celebrated 68 years of marriage. He was born in Lebanon, PA. on March 13, 1926, to the late Alvin C. and Violet (Ulrich) Berger. After serving in the US Navy from 1944-1945, he earned his undergraduate degree from Lebanon Valley College and two graduate degrees from Columbia University. He taught high school English and drama and then went on to a 35-year career as a librarian at East Stroudsburg University. He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Stroudsburg, where he sang in the choir and served on Consistory. Music, especially opera, was an important part of his life. He played several instruments and sang with the Pocono Choral Society. He enjoyed canoeing, cross country skiing, the outdoors and a good glass of scotch. He and his wife traveled widely with particular interest in England and Germany. Surviving in addition to his wife are his children, Jo Ellen and her husband John Gailey of Malvern, Leslie Berger of Stroudsburg, Karl Berger and his wife Maribeth Visco of Frederick, MD, Jean and her husband Christopher Boheim of Tannersville; grandchildren Alex Gailey, Isabelle Berger, Toby Berger, Tristin Boheim; a brother Henry Berger of Annville, sisters Helen Brown of Annville and Margaret Canon of Lebanon. He was preceded in death by a sister, Esther Crooks, and a sister-in-law, June Berger. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at 12 noon from Kreamer Funeral Home, 618 E. Main Street, Annville, PA. Interment will be in Mt. Annville Cemetery, Annville. There will be a time of visitation held with the family from 11:30 AM till 12 Noon. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 1:30PM at Zion United Church of Christ, 14 North 8th Street, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.
