Alice Barreiro

Alice V. Barreiro of Lewes, Delaware passed away peacefully on March 19, 2014 in a home she and her husband Camilo Barreiro, also of Lewes Delaware, shared with their daughter and son in law Thomas M. and Gila Hodge in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Her dear son and daughter in law, Bernard and Sharon Barreiro of Elmsford, New York also survive her. Alice was born on January 7, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio to Jose-Pedro Celestino Perez Valcarce and Bonifacia Rodriguez Valcarce. While both were from Valtuille de Arriba, Spain they met and married in Havana, Cuba before emigrating to the United States. The Valcarce family was forced to relocate from Cleveland to Sleepy Hollow (formerly North Tarrytown), New York during the Great Depression. There Alice graduated from North Tarrytown High School and met her future husband who had immigrated from Tavilo, Spain with his family. The couple were married October 9, 1954 and lived in White Plains, New York. They would have been married 60 years this October. Alice was very proud of the years she spent working at American Aircraft (the retooled General Motors Corp) during WWII where she riveted wings of aircraft used in the war. She was an original Rosie the Riveter. After the war, Alice worked as a secretary/bookkeeper at Reader’s Digest, The American Kennel Club, Nestles, and finally with her husband at their own company, Westchester Album Corp. She and her husband also lived in Cherry Hill, New Jersey and Blacksburg, Virginia before settling for their retirement in Lewes, Delaware. She and her husband enjoyed many wonderful trips to exotic locations during their retirement. Alice was a voracious reader and valued education. For that reason she volunteered to read to children at various local schools. Her greatest pleasure, though, was to spend time with her family, especially her 5 grandchildren, Thomas Jesse and Jessica Powers Hodge of Boulder, Colorado, Stephanie Barreiro of Miller Place, New York, Brooke Barreiro and Kellen Chapman of Wappinger Falls, New York, Rachel Hodge of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Jacqueline Barreiro of West Brookville, New York. Alice was also a devoted sister to Jose Valcarce, Rafaela Florence Valcarce, and Helen Valcarce Marschke who all preceded her in death.
